Citronella bark control dog collars?

I am looking into getting one of these citronella bark control collars for my dog becuase her barking is getting way out of hand. She starts barking at the slightest noise and anytime she sees another dog or person when I take her outside. Has anyone ever used this before and has it been effective?

Also if anyone has any ideas that will help me get my dogs barking under control I’d appreciate it. Thanks!

The Expert answers:

I’ve been training dogs for a very long time. I have not found the citronella collars to be effective. Most dogs I know figured out VERY quickly that they can empty the collar by one spurt of massive barking… Resulting in a huge amount of citronella sprayed into the air, the dog’s eyes and nose.

Frankly, my suggestion (since you’ve already been working on it unsuccessfully) would be to use an e-collar. Dogs learn from this VERY quickly, rarely get shocked more than a couple times and it is more humane than constantly being corrected for barking. It also is more humane than de-barking.

They are called electronic fences, and they can lead to aggression problems. Not to mention that for 5 acres you will be spending a small fortune!

Instead, try pounding a stake into the ground and giving him a long lead to run on. If he won’t be outside for long periods of time then this won’t harm him and it is fairly cheap.

The Expert answers:

Training your dog not to bark without the aid of a no-bark collar would of course be the best course of action, especially if the barking problem only occurs when you are with her. But, you asked about the collars.

There are lots of different types of bark collars that work in different ways with varying degrees of success.

The sound-producing ones are often a high-pitched sound that your dog can hear but you can’t. I’ve never talked to anyone who’s used one, but you might try some other sound aversion techniques (for example, drop a small coffee can half-full of pennies or pebbles on the pavement when she barks) to see if your dog will respond to that before spending the money on a collar. Some dogs get so into their barking that they don’t even care, which is probably why your spray bottle doesn’t always work. BUT if your dog responds to sound aversion in this situation, it might be worth it.

There are also collars which spray citronella mist in your dog’s face. It doesn’t hurt the dog but it sounds pretty horrible to me.

By far the most common type of no-bark collar is the shock collar. If you decide to get one of these, make sure it has enough levels that you can turn it really low. Your dog should be just barely uncomfortable, like you scuffing your feet on the carpet and touching something metal (or another person.) If your dog yelps or jumps, it’s set too high. To set it properly, you should start at the lowest level and work up slowly until your dog shows some sort of reaction. I have a remote training collar that I used to teach my dog emergency stops off-leash. It went from 1 to 14. I couldn’t even feel level 1 on my bare hand. My dog worked on level 3. That’s what you want the ability to do.

Also, no matter what kind of collar you want to get, you should look at the type of sensor it uses. Most collars have only a vibration sensor, so the dog may get a correction for something like scratching or shaking instead of barking. Some collars have a microphone, and they can get corrected when a large or noisy vehicle drives by (a good way to make your dog terrified of those!) If you’re going to get a collar, I would recommend one that has BOTH types of sensors, like this one:

http://www.moorepet.com/PetSafe-Premium-Deluxe-Bark-Control-Collar-p/mps-pdbc-300.htm

That will minimize the chance of a false correction.

Also, you should limit the amount of time your dog wears the collar, and remove it if she shows signs of discomfort. Even the non-shocking collars generally have to be put on very tightly in order for the sensors to work, and it can be uncomfortable for your dog after a while.

I hope this helps.

The Expert answers:

Would you like to get them a snuggie too? Because obviously the only reason why you would get dog’s that have heavy coats any type of clothing is because you live in a very, very cold area-or your dogs were just recently completely shaved. Oh? They weren’t? Ah well then, they have no need for clothes, or other ‘accessories’.The only accessory a canine needs is a collar and a leash.

The Expert answers:

For one you need just a little trash can that you can put somewhere for when your friends come over. I would talk to your dad about getting some shelves they REALLY help getting organized maybe a desk for your school stuff? I’d try to get a really big make up bag. There are some super cute ones at target, some even have little compartments to keep that organized too lol. I would just toss the dog toys out, go through your papers and stuff, whatever you don’t need THROW AWAY! People rarely do that, if you’ve forgotten you have it, it’s time to pitch it, I used to get rid of garbage bag fulls of stuff that I didn’t need, to help your closet, go through your clothes, what doesn’t fit or you don’t wear (haha minus those crappy out fits aunts and relatives try to get you) take them somewhere like plato’s closet. It’ll really help clean it up and leave room for your summer wardrobe (you know you’re gonna go shopping again lol) Folding is your friend, it really takes less space to fold your clothes, so don’t just dump them haha. It’s easy if you make piles I guess of different things then organize in the pile and decide where you’re going to put it. It’s funny when you move out and get your own place you get more… Talent with this lloll

What’s the best way to keep your dog cool in the heat? Has anyone tried a cooling vest?

My dog does agility, but it’s hard for him to be out in the heat all day for trials. We live in Tucson, AZ, and I have a black Chow/Husky mix. He’s not really built to stand the heat (he’s an indoor dog normally). It’s really too hot here to do trials out in the hot sun April-September, but I was hoping to maybe get one more in the first weekend of April before we have to take a 6 month break until October. It will probably be in the 90s, so I’m concerned he’ll be way too hot and have no energy. My plan was to bring tons of water and keep him soaking wet all day.

However, I’ve realized that soaking him really doesn’t keep him wet for long. We just came from a fun run outside in the middle of the day, and it was probably about 85 degrees. I would pour water on him, but he would be dry again within 5 minutes. So, I happened to think that maybe I should get him a cooling vest. Like this http://www.onlynaturalpet.com/product_detail.aspx?item_guid=4B35D4F2-5CC9-4FB7-B646-346F8F2E213E&click=124&9gtype=search&9gkw=Froogle-Click&9gad=5561049311.11&9gqu=Froogle-SE&utm_source=google&utm_medium=CSE&utm_campaign=Clothing_Accessories&utm_content=p

They’re quite expensive, so I’m wondering, is it worth it? Does it work well for very fluffy dogs? Does anyone have a brand that they recommend? Do you think this will work at the trial (obviously he would just wear it when we’re not in the ring), or do you think it’s a bad idea to do a trial when it’s so hot?

Where’s a good place to get dog bikinis?

I want to get my black chihuahua, Chanel, a cute pink bikini to wear when I go tanning or swimming. She goes with me everywhere in her purse and is always wearing a cute outfit! She’s got 36 and hopefully 37! I would prefer for it to be a store and not a website. If they sell other dog clothes and accessories, it would be an added bonus! Remember, it has to be pink. Chanel only wears pink.
Jan; Yeah, but she sits outside of the booth if I go to a salon. If I’m tanning outside, she lays out with me.

I have a chihuahua and a miniature pinscher. I usually dress them up in hoodies when it’s cold outside but I used to dress them up in summer dresses occasionally. They actually liked it and when they seen me with their clothes in my hand, would walk towards me to put their head in without me having to force them. I never put shoes or anything like that on them though bc I would imagine that would be uncomfortable. I do know that walmart sales dog bikinis and I’ve seen some at petsmart. You can also look on ebay bc they have tons of dog clothes and most aren’t that expensive.

Well i have a yorkie and feel the same way! Okay so measure from where his collar sits to the beginning of his tail. Around the kneck and if youre planning on adding sleeves from the hips down, around the legs but leave a little wiggle room for the guy so add on like 3/4 of an inch or something like that!!

Should I Use Dog Clothes?

I live in California where it is mainly warm but sometimes cold in the Winter. I have a little Westie at 6 weeks old (I know that it is a very young age to be buying a pet) and during last years Christmas, she was shivering when I took him out and it was very hard for her to get warm. Yet as I say dog clothes, I don’t mean going over the top with PJ’s and other but just like a small coat. Would that be alright? I don’t want to be judged by other people thinking that I use Jayne (her name) as accessories or other. I am a first time dog owner by the way so I wouldn’t know how to handle this, should I not care what they think have Jayne use the clothes or Have her not wear them?

The Expert answers:

That’s awesome that you want to protect your dog from the elements. There’s times when you need to dress your dog up and this is one of those time – there’s nothing wrong with that. It shows that you’re a responsible pet owner. I can’t speak for how cold it gets, because we would still take my westie for full walks in single digit temperatures (so would everyone in our neighborhood), but we had a Spring type jacket that only covered her back and when it dropped below maybe 30 degrees, we’d put this hoodie type jacket on her that covered all 4 legs, her back, her stomach, her neck. That kept her warm and she liked that coat, especially when she would plow through a foot of snow, with only her tail sticking above the snow. We also had a rain jacket for her. That was nice to have. No more would we have to get home from the walk and get the hair dryer out before she could run around. To protect your dog from winter, especially if she’s showing signs that she’s cold, don’t worry about other people, do what you need to, to protect her and keep her warm. Any dog owner will support you on that.

Tips for my outdoor miniature schnauzer?

I live in Missouri, I have a miniature schnauzer, and he’s an outdoor dog. We’ve let his hair grow out pretty long for a mini schnauzer.
I have a 4 month old mini schnauzer puppy, she´s getting spayed on november 17, at what age will she stop growing? Don´t get me wrong, I don´t care about her size, but it´s already getting cold in my city and I would like to buy her some warm clothes for her daily walks, but I want to buy something that she´ll continue to use for the whole winter, even if it fits big now. 30 dollars for a jacket seems really expensive if she´ll grow out of it soon.

dog and allergy testing question also can black mold permantly affect the respirtory system? What now?

Okay our poodle went to the doctor yesterday for his allergies and she put him on an antihistimine for his allergies to see if it helps (we are going to be trying this one and she said if it doesn’t work there are others we can try but this one won’t make him drowsy and he gets drowsy even with a low dose of benedryl) She also gave him a spray for his feet to prevent them from itching so he doesn’t scratch them or bite them and get an infection. (We think grass is his main allergy)
But normally he doesn’t scratch at himself that was just a precaution.

He is not allowed outdoors on any day they cut the grass in our complex so twice a week, she said he can still go out on the patio and use the potty pad so he doesn’t get out of habit of going outside. And fall and winter he should be able to go out whenever he wants (just put a jacket on him so he doesn’t freeze, that way he still gets to play outside is his favorite place to be)

Also we don’t think he has any food allergies just inhalent allergies (aka seasonal allergies) because he has trouble breathing outdoors after the grass is cut.
The big allergy is fresh cut grass.

Now plan b is if we don’t see significant improvement she recommends Alergy testing but she wants that to be an option later down the road.

Now if we have to go that route tell me is it painful (like when people have it done is it the same kind of procedure)? Is it too terribly expensive? (not a big deal but I would like to put some money away if it is just incase we need to do it)

Also his breathing (off topic a bit) in the apartment we were living before around the time we moved out we discovered black mold (I went to the doctor several times with breathing problems and we couldn’t pinpoint why) we don’t know how long the mold was there but our poodle lived in that apartment from age 9 weeks until 11 months could that have caused significant damage to his respiratory system? I am curious I feel so bad we didn’t catch that if that is the case. She isn’t too concerned about his breathing right now but I hope that didn’t trigger the problem. He seems fine in those regards but we are to watch him.

they said allergy shots are part of plan b

2 yrs ago, our dachshund started having problems. She was scratching herself raw and bald. Most of her hair was gone. We took her to the vet numerous times, as we were quite concerned. She used to be so playful, and now all she’d do was sleep and scratch. The vet couldn’t figure out what was wrong with her, other than must be an allergy. He prescribed, benedryl and selsun blue. Neither helped. We couldn’t figure out what to do to help her.

Last year we moved, when we did, we noticed all this nasty black mold growing in every room of the house. Within a month of being moved, our dachshund quit scratching, and her hair started to grow back. She became her playful old self again. Also, my husband and I are also feeling better, we didn’t notice how it was affecting us until after we got out and started feeling better.

WooWoo (our dachshund) seems to have no lasting ill effects from the black mold, hopefully your poodle won’t either. That black mold is some nasty dangerous stuff. I’m glad y’all were able to get away from it.

Ways to keep my Min Pin mix Warm this Winter..?

I have a Beagle/Min Pin mix, she’s a mutt altogether because these aren’t the only breeds in her. She has short hair but has to stay outside for 2 reasons, I live with my Grandma (I’m only 13,) and I have another dog, and there basically best friends, so neither of them would cope well if I left them inside. My male is neutered, but still pees everywhere and has long fur, so he keeps warm. (He’s a Yorkie, Poodle, Corgi)
Both my dogs stay inside during night time & when I’m home, but they can’t stay unsupervised in the house.
I already have a Jacket for her, but should I get her booties, scarves, leg warmers, etc.? They do make Leg Warmers for dogs. Does that sound like a good idea or not?
Thank You in Advance:)
Yes, I know dogs take Time, Space, and Money. My dogs get Blue Buffalo, thank you. I’ve had dogs since I was 2. They have a huge backyard, get PREMIUM food, and I spend like over 10 hours with them daily! They get fed recommended amounts, and they vet gives them both Thumbs Up and we asked if it was okay if we kept them outside, they said it was perfectly safe as long as we have them shelter and warmth! We live in Kentucky, by the way. It barely gets below freezing, most of the time. If it does my dogs are outside. Both my dogs stay inside during the coldest part of the day, just not during Daylight.
If I didn’t have my dogs Well being in mind, would I be worried about her! No! Would I have asked this question? No!

If it sleeps in a kennel or a dog house you could put the kennel near the house, like on the porch or the deck and you could plug in a heating pad and put that in the kennel to keep her warm.
The dog will probably not like the sweater, it tends to irritates their skin and fun. Also a dog will definately just tear up the booties or leg warmers so don’t waste your money.

Hello.

I started jogging 2 years ago. This is something I had never done before. Obviously I started off very slowly. But now there is no stopping me. I love it.

I live in London. Today has been wet, windy and cold. But I did manage to go for a run this morning and managed to keep warm.

I wore my long jogging bottoms, a long sleeve tee shirt and my wind proof jacket. I also wore my gloves. The gloves I took off after I was jogging for 10 minutes. But when it is really cold. I also, believe it or not, wear my hat and scarf. God knows what I must look like. Anyway I don’t really care. I just enjoy jogging.

I live near a big park called Bushy Park. This is a really good place to jog. As it has a soft surface. This is the key. But if you are relegated to the roads then try to jog on the verge along the road’s edge. Try to avoid roads with a steep camber to them. These can be very dangerous and throw you off foot. Also leading to sore muscles and injuries. Try to choose tarmac roads over concrete. Jog against oncoming traffic. This makes you more visible to the car driver.

Anyway, I hope I have been a little help to you.

Take care of yourself and your new dog.

You need very little. Get naked, the collar and leash are good, kneel at his feet then kiss his feet, give him a bj,and ask how you can serve him.
I like spending the day being the slave. It can be a lot of fun running around the house naked trying to make your master happy. We usually switch roles Saturday and Sunday.
Never used a leash and collar but that would be erotic.

what do you recommend as a good website to purchase a UF themed leash and dog collar?

My BF and I are adopting a 1.5 y/o great dane, and my BF really would like to purchase a matching leash and dog collar for it that is Florida Gator themed- orange and blue, etc.
I have done some brief searches in the past week or so online and with so little time on my hands, I’m having trouble finding the perfect ones.
Any recommendations on websites? Here is what we need it to be, other than gator themed…

*really sturdy- this dog is not a dog- its a horse.
*nice- not too busy of a pattern- but don’t stress about it- in the end, im the one buying it so give me what chya got
*we measured the pupppy’s neck and came up with 26″ if i remember correctly- but basically- the dog needs a huge collar! so try to leave out the sites that only sell up to 22″ and all… he also needs growing room- he will be beefing up some, his previous owners didnt really keep him healthy, in shape or fed well enough.

let me see what you find, thanks so much! (price is not a factor)
i do like pictures so try to stay away from the site that dont give previews!

He quickly headed up the stairs, stepping over toys and more piles of clothes, looking for his wife. He was worried she might be ill, or that something serious had happened.
He was met with a small trickle of water as it made its way out the bathroom door. As he peered inside he found wet towels, scummy soap and more toys strewn over the floor. Miles of toilet paper lay in a heap and toothpaste had been smeared over the mirror and walls. As he rushed to the bedroom, he found his wife still curled up in the bed in her pajamas, reading a novel. She looked up at him, smiled, and asked how his day went. He looked at her bewildered and asked, “What happened here today?” She again smiled and answered, “You know – every day when you come home from work and you ask me what in the world I do all day?” “Yes,” was his incredulous reply.

A Joke — Funny Or Not?

Who can relate?

The Expert answers:

This is just a very Interesting and touching thing of how a wife responds to her husband by showing him in action as to what she does all day in the house.

Many don’t know that what their partners do in the house and it becomes extremely difficult for them to express it in words as the others won’t get convinced about their work.So what I would say is that it is better to show something in action rather than just expressing it in words or telling them. This is so true which is brought out by taking the above as an example! Its very easy to criticize others work or pains but its difficult to accept them in reality when its shown in action!

Appreciating each others work is important rather than questioning about their routine or doubting their presence.

I would prefer to travel by sea because 11+ hours on a plane in the cargo hold dosn’t sound much fun for a dog. Does any one know of any cargo carriers that would take us as passengers?

The Expert answers:

Recommend that you leave your dog in the UK…Pets have a tendency to disappear if they are left outside, especially in rural areas…And a lot of dogs run free throughout the country.

If you decide to take your dog anyway, make sure you check the Thai customs rules for bring pets into the country…I do know that there will be a quarantine period.

Thailand is a great place and there is a grand water festival coming up in Mar or Apr – to celebrate the coming rainy season…And never, ever disrespect the king or queen…Besides, both are superb monarchs.

The Expert answers:

He needs to be under 20lbs and fit in the under the seat carrier to ride in the cabin with you. Sherpa makes a nice one.

Otherwise, a regular hard plastic kennel works, and you check him in kinda like baggage, as that’s where he’ll end up, is in the baggage hold.

You mentioned going to the states? If you are traveling here from another country, you need to check and see if this is really a good idea, because I believe (I’m not positive) that animals coming into the states have to go thru quarantine or some such before they are allowed in.
Try this site

http://www.petsandtravel.co.uk/how-much-cost-tale-pet-plane-train-boat.html

Make arrangements ahead, as the airlines must know well in advance, and you may need a certificate of good health from your vet.
Make certain that the airline you choose does allow in-cabin pets, as some do not.

Take your dogs for several short car rides before the trip, so they get used to the noise and movement and different environment. Use the travel kennel, so they get used to it

I am in the US of course, and I’ve been trying to look up about importing dogs, but everything is different, some say the pups will have to be quarantined, some say I can just go to the airport, pick them up and take them home, etc.

Also, my friend who will be sending me the dogs says that they will not need a carrier because the plane has built in holds for dogs, however, I am fairly sure that any non service animal that is traveling must have a carrier that is provided by the person putting the dog on the plane.

So, does anyone have first hand experience importing/exporting dogs? I really need these questions answered so I know what to expect when the time comes.

So here are all my questions:
Am I right about the pups needing carriers?
The pups will be coming from Pakistan to the US, will they have to be quarantined somewhere?(I should be getting them under the age of 3 months)
What exactly should I expect and what should my friend expect when doing this?
And also my friend said something about he would be getting a cargo number when he loads the pups up and then he can give that to me, and that is how I can pick up the pups, is that true?
And lastly, what can I expect the cost for 5 pups to be imported? 4 at one time and the 5th will either before the other 4 or after, not sure yet.
Okay I know about scammers, this isn’t a scam, I actually KNOW him, seen his dogs at breed meet ups, etc, but even though we have flown before, neither have imported dogs…I think he’s just mixed up about carriers. And I know years ago all animals had to be quarantined but I’ve heard recently people are not having to do that. Now, I would appreciate some answers to my actual questions, not some life lessons because you think you understand the situation.
Charlie- I am testy because everyone on here deems themselves the god of dogs and feels they need to educate everyone on irrelevant things because they assume things in a situation. People import dogs all the time, but god forbid I try to do it from Pakistan and suddenly it must be a scam. It doesn’t matter that I may have to wait up to 4 YEARS to get these dogs because he is only breeding his dog twice, how many scammers make you wait, especially that long? And I didn’t ask if they thought it was a scam, I ask about what I should expect when importing.
Now, if I can ask you a question, what do you believe would be easier? A pet transportation service or just a commercial airline?

The Expert answers:

Your testiness is not necessary. People are just trying to help you. If the guy is going to send the pups by commercial airline, they must have kennels. If he is using a pet transport service, he may not need them. He needs to tell you exactly how he is sending the pups..the name of the airline he is using and you can call and talk to them. Since HE is doing the sending, HE is responsible to get all the correct info andd send it to you. If you have doubts about him because he does not give you all the info or does not seem organized, might be better not to so business with him.

I have a Jack Russell and Doxin Mix , she has a body like a Doxin would she beable to be on a airplane?

I talked to a lady at the airport on the phone and told her what kind of dog I had and she said I should be fine as long as she can fit in a small pet carrier and has had all her shots. because I am moving to another location. I definitely do not trust the airlines putting my dog in the cargo for one she would not be able to handle being without me. She gets very shaky and scared if she is not with me. And the lady from the airport that talk to me on the phone says I should be just fine. But she has a Doxin body with Jack Russell face. She is just a little thing. This dog carrier thing is soft material but it has metal post like for the frame of this pet carrier , and its small and it holds up to 15 lbs and I think she weighs a little less than that. I plan to take her to the vet this week and have her get all of her shots all in one visit and have the vet write out paper work for her. I sure hope I do not have to have a license for her because then the visit is going to be way too expensive. And I need the money for hotel cost and so forth. I already got my plane ticket and the lady that I talked to on the phone from the airport told me I did’nt have to make reservations that I can just pay for my dog once I arive at the airport. So who ever has had similar experience like I will be going through if you have extra information that will be helpful and is very accurate due to your experience with the airport and flying please let me know. Thank you.

“Doxin” is how the word sounds, but it actually spelled “dachshund.” the lady at the airport gave you very WRONG info. You need to call the airline you are going to use, not the airport. You MUSt make a reservation for your dog ahead of time to ride in a carrier with you….you MUSST.
Question about air travel with a dog?

In order for a dog to travel in the cabin of the plane, most of the air lines require that the dog be able to stand in their carrier, at least that’s what they say on their web sites. My dog would be able to move around and turn, but it’s a little too tall to fully stand in the carrier. How carefully do the airlines check to see that “standing” requirment is met?

I just got my puppy the sleepypod air … It fits pretty much every airline (gives different airline dimensions on the website) because the ends can be bent up for take off and landing to fit right under the seat but then during the flight the ends flip down and you can angle the carrier between your feet to give the dog more room … It says it fits dogs up to 15 pounds but i put my 14 dog in there and he could not stand up and turn around but my 4 pound dog it is quite spacious … All you need to fly is a carrier … It is no longer suggested to sedate dogs when traveling by air …

Traveling with toy breed via plane.need advice/tips?

Some of you may know that we were planning on having Lacey boarded and many of you gave us great feedback. Some advice we did take on looking for specifics in boarding places vs the vet’s boarding.
We decided to bring her with us to the big island. The airlines we will be going with is pet friendly <20 pounds.
We have got a pet carrier for her, portable water bottle, treats, dry food, waste bags, bringing her bowls, her favorite stuffed animal. We’re getting her distemper done & we’ll get her health certificate from her dr.
Is there anything else we’re missing? How has some of you trained your dog to be in the carrier? Thanks for your help in advance!
I forgot to mention that we were already planning to bring puppy pads along.
I wasn’t familiar with the HI quarantine laws.Thank you for the link
Also the airlines we will be going with Hwn Airlines said that she doesn’t need a health certificate from her vet.She should be under 20 pounds in weight + crate and should follow the dimensions of 9.5″ H X 10″ W X 16″ L.They told us that she will be a carry on and will be booked with myself with my parents on the same flight. They told us nothing about the HI Animal Quarantine laws.

The Expert answers:

I would bring a few of those puppy pads you can buy from Petsmart. I’m sure your dog is already potty trained but she’s very small, which means her bladder is small. You’re going to be in the airport for probably 2 hours, and then a long flight. Before your flight starts boarding, you can take her to the bathroom and put a puppy pad down in one of the stalls with you in the hopes that she’ll got ahead and pee on that before you get on the plane. Puppy pads have some sort of scent on them that attracts animals to pee on them specifically. At least if she misses the puppy pad, it would be easy to wipe up a little pee off the bathroom floor. Keeping that in mind, you may want to bring some of those Clorox disinfecting wipes.

Dog flying in cabin? How?

I only want answers from experienced or knowledgeable people in this subject. I want to fly my Chiuahuah with me when i visit Germany this Summer. i would leave him but the last time I did, he wouldn’t eat and sit at the window the whole time. i love my doggie too much to put him through that.I will be gone for three months total. Direct answers would be best appreciated. Thank you!
Are there only certain airlines that allow dogs in cabin? Who? How big does the carrier have to be? He has a long neck so he can’t strech his neck completely up but it looks comfy to me.
What all documentation must I have? Should I buy a muzzle? (He will bite strangers) What are the limits regarding how big the carrier can be? What about connecting flights? Also I will be flying in a small plane at some point both ways so will they allow his carrier in there too? The plane will have two or three lanes at the most. The large plane will of course be huge.

The Expert answers:

First:
See this document about dog/cat import forms for Germany:

http://www.aphis.usda.gov/regulations/vs/iregs/animals/downloads/ge_cn_hc_fill.doc

and/or

http://www.aphis.usda.gov/regulations/vs/iregs/animals/downloads/ee_cn_fe-cert.pdf

These may both ask for the same info – not sure because I did not read through all of them.

Talk to your vet about travel – many vets are quite experienced in travel preparation.

Some information:
Pet dogs, cats, and ferrets must be identified with either a clearly readable tattoo or a microchip. The microchip must comply with ISO standard 11784 or 11785 Annex A, or the appropriate microchip reader must be provided along with the pet. Annex A type microchips available in the United States include AKC/TROVAN, HOMEAGAIN and AVID EUROCHIP.

Second:
Find out which airlines fly between the cities you need to travel between
Call several of them and ask:
- What are their rules about small dog travel: cabin or cargo hold
- Where do you bring your pet when you get to the airport – it may be that you do not drop him off at the check in counter, could be in an air cargo location
- What are the carrier/kennel regulations: type, size etc.
- What are the rules for food, water and waste
- What does it cost
- Do they have rules that say they will not transport animals in extreme weather (too hot, too cold)
- What happens on connections – what happens if a connection is missed
- What happens on long delays
- What medical/vet forms do they require (may be in addition or different from the destination country’s needs)

If your travel will involve connecting on multiple different airline (one domestically within the US, a different one across to Europe, then a third within Europe), then you probably need to call each of the airlines involved and ask them all of the same questions.

Third:
Google “international pet import” and check out various pet transport services. They can assist in the entire process – sometimes doing all of the arrangements. They may be costly, however.
For example: http://www.petrelocation.com/pet-relocation-resources

Fourth:
Be prepared to pay quite a lot of money – in addition to the ticket cost.

Fifth:
Does the place where you are staying in Germany welcome pets – especially those that may bite strangers? Do you have, or can you get, some kind of liability insurance in case he does bite someone?

Sixth:
Think really hard about whether this is a good idea for your pet. 3 months is a long time, but travel – especially long international travel – is hard on pets. You will have to go through some of the same issues on the way back.

Good luck.

Don’t you find it sick how dogs live better than most people?

There’s pet food bakeries and dog psychatrists, and designer pet clothing brands for crying out loud. More people buy Christmas presents for their dogs than donate to holiday charities for people. And my aunt- she used to be a loving aunt that spent a lot of time visiting us. But ever since she got this dog years ago all she ever does is spend time with it. She skipped my own graduation party because “her dog gets grumpy when she leaves”. She always places her dogs’ priorities over any of her relatives. Any dog this obnoxious, pampered and dependant deserves to die.
Things aren’t always as they appear. Sorry I didn’t realize all of it wasn’t there, when posted earlier.

A man was flying from Seattle to San Francisco. Unexpectedly, the plane was diverted to Sacromento along the way. The flight attendant explained that there was to be a delay and if the passengers wanted to get off of the aircraft, they would be re-boarding in 50 mins.

Everybody got of off the plane except one lady who was blind. The man had noticed she was blind because of the Seeing Eye dog was lying quietly under the seat in front of her through the entire flight.

He could also tell she had flown this flight before, because the pilot approached her and called her by name, He said “Kathy, we are in Sacramento for almost an hour. Would you like to get off stretch and your legs?” The blind lady replied “No, but maybe my dog would like to stretch his legs.”

Picture this: All the people at the gate came to a stand still when they looked up and saw the pilot walk off of the plane with a Seeing Eye dog! The pilot was even wearing sun glasses. People scattered. They were not only trying to change flights, but also airlines!

Have a great day and remember things aren’t always as they appear

If you were my english teacher, what grade would you give me? I’m in the 7th grade if that helps.?

Poem # One- Entitled: a Stupid letter to an Ex-Valentine
Love, if you were a flower,
I would live to be a gardener.
I would kill the nasty weeds.
And when your petals melt away
I would fall upon my spade.

Love, if you were stronger,
I would take you where I wanted.
To a place I imagined far away.
We needn’t listen to a word they say.
Where they couldn’t tell us that our dreams
Are simple matters that mean nothing.

Love, if you cared enough,
I’d confess that I’m in love.
If I knew you wouldn’t turn away.
I would not write, I would say.
I would take you home today.

Poem # 2- Entitled: The Day my mother changed the lock.
I liked to imagine that some day,
I would hear my father’s car in the drive way.
I liked to picture him standing here.
His glasses crooked,
His keys in hand.
But then, my mother changed the lock
And I knew the day would never come,
And if it did I would not know.
Until I saw my mother’s face
In the morning.
Just like when he left
Without a sound.
I wasn’t asleep
I might have stopped him.
But, I was young
And tired as a dog.
And in the morning there was mom,
Her hair a mess
Her face so plain
There was no makeup on today.
And then on the way to school.
She got a call,
But then it was too late.
I never heard from Dad again.
He went away,
And took his keys with him.
Sometimes I imagine I hear him
And with a throb
My heart races as I watch the knob.
But he never will come home.

You should definitely turn that in, it is personal, but not too personal. If your mom goes to read your portfolio tell her that there is some stuff you would rather she did not read and then take those pieces out and ask that she respects your wishes. If she asks why your teacher could read it but she couldn’t tell her that it is something about the divorce that you just do not want to talk about with her.

The Expert answers:

First let me say great first run! The idea of the lock as the subject is truly original, and beautiful.

If you want to improve, try to omit all pronouns. If you do, then the reader will plug in his/her own subconsciously, and the poem will become their own. That is what you want in poetry, after all.

(example, first two lines…could be something like… Some day, father’s car will be in the driveway”)

You have a beautiful narrative. A child hoping his parents will get back together. Even grown-ups wait for this. If you try and omit some of the conclusory lines, again, the reader will fill it in on his/her own, and be blown away. For example, omit “And I knew the day would never come”,” and “But he never will come home again”. You use such fantastic imagery, the reader will know what is coming, he/she doesn’t need to be told “he never will come home again”. Through your excellent imagery and narrative, the reader is bated to ask himself/herself what happens to the speaker’s family, And by using your imagery as a guide, he/she will understand that this father isn’t coming back. Or maybe he will vainly hope he is. Either way, the experience you want to convey is the longing for the father, and you convey this much better by not telling the reader what happens. Hope that makes sense. Great work! Really!

I wasn’t asleep.
I might have stopped him.
But, I was young
And so afraid.
In the morning there was mom,
Her hair a mess,
Her face so plain.
There was no makeup on today.
On the way to school,
She got a call,
But now it was too late.
I never heard from Dad again,
He went away,
And took his keys with him.
Sometimes I imagine I hear him,
And with a rush
My heart races as I watch the knob.
But he never will come home.

Fantastic. What a tear jerker.

Does this happen with all dog breeds, or are my eyes just bad?

Hey everyone, how’s it going?

I have an 8 ( soon to be 9 ) month old Labrador puppy, named Coco. I’ve always thought she was quite different to most other Labs, but recently I’m not so sure. It may just be that she’s getting older and losing her ‘puppiness’, but she’s looking more and more like other Labs these days.

I went to my Mum and Dads’ yesterday and took Coco with me. As she played and explored in their backyard I started to discuss the look-a-like situation with my Mum. Mum said “No! No dogs look exactly like Coco, she’s different to them.” I guess in some ways she is, but mostly I think she looks like most other labs I see.

Anyway, have you found that this is the same with your dog, that they are starting to look like most other dogs of the same breed? Or do you think that I need to have my eyes checked ^.^

( I do need glasses for long distance situations, lol )

This isn’t a major concern of mine, just wondering what you think, I’ll still love Coco all the same!

Here’s some pictures of her, feel free to look through them all, comment, whatever!

Here’s some of other Labs, can you see any resemblance?

Chater eight.
“bree! its snowing!” Alden shouted.
My eyes flew opem. He was wearing a blue button up shirt with dark jeans. I blinked a few times and noticed he was kneeling over me. I got up and looked out my window. There was a thick sheet of snow and a million snowflakes falling from the sky.
“just like my dream,” i whispered.
“What?” He asked.
“Oh!” I spun around. “Nothing,” I smiled. “Let me get dressed and i’ll be right out okay?”
“Yeah Shure,” he nodded.
I walked into my closet and turned on the light.I grabbed some black skinny jeans and a blue sweater. I shut my door and got changed. I grabbed a pink fur lined hoodie just incase. I looked through my shoes and found a pair of pink uggs and i put them on. I put my jacket on and walked out.
“You look beautiful, we match.” he smiled.
“Thank you,”
I grabbed my cellphone off my dresser and put it in my back pocket.
“Okay lets go.” i said. He wrapped his arm around mine and we walked downstairs.
“Bree we made you breakfast,” Cade said. “On the counter,”
“Thanks i think i’ll eat outside though,” I said grabbing my plate.
“Whatever,”
“Umm shure.” i said nodding.
“see ya cade.”
“bye bree.”
We walked out the front door, and i took a bit of bacon.
“I feel really stupid walking and eating,” i said looking at Alden.
“Okay we’ll sit up here” He said pointing to a bench. Once we sat down, i scarfed everything down. It felt so nice on my cold throat.
“Great now i have to carry this around,” i said lifting the plate. “I didn’t think of that.”
“Give it here,” Alden said holding his hand. I handed him the plate. He threw it like a frisbee into the woods.
“Alden!” i laughed.
“What i didnt do anything,” he laughed. “ready?”
I nodded and stood up. He took my hand and we walked down the sidewalk. I put my hood on to keep my ears warm. Alden was just wearing his shirt. Stupid vampire. I smiled to myself.
“Hey wanna go to that park? i asked.
“Shure, wanna race?” he asked.
“Your on! go!” i shouted getting a head start.
“Cheater!” he yelled from behind me. In half a second he was already at the park.
“Hey!” i yelled laughing. He walked back to me.
“I won,” He laughed. I pushed him back. I walked to the swings, and sat down. Alden started to push me.
“Too high!” i yelled when i was almost going horizontal. He grabbed the chains when i came back down, and i looked into his baby blue eyes.
“Hey come back!” a little girl yelled. I pulled ,my attention away and looked at her. She was chasing after a little pug who was running towards the road. The girl was probably four or five with the cutest little brown curls. Alden took off after the dog. I walked up to the little girl. Alden came back with the dog in his hands, he handed it to her.
“Huh your cold!” She screached holding her dog. “Are you a vampwire?” She sounded like a little doll.
“Ummm,” alden began
“Oh no, her dog was running towards the road, i didnt want them to get hit.”
“Aizewl, can we stay and play with them for a littewl bit?” She jumped up and down the dogs head looked like it was going to bounce off.
“No i think they want to be alone,” Aizel said. Alden looked at me, i shrugged my shoulders.
“You can join us if you want,” Alden said.
“Reawly!” The little girl yelled looking at me.
“Shure” i smiled.

I believe that your story could be 100% better if you focused more on your description rather than your dialogue. I have to be honest, I was utterly bored after reading the first paragraph. To me, you story began with a nice hook if it was a beginning to a children’s book. However, since this is a vampire thriller, I should have been spooked the moment I laid eyes on your introduction.

Whenever you are writing any type of suspense (including vampire thrillers) always have that spirit linger in the wakes, not just in your mind but on the page.

For example: A shadow was cast upon Jessie’s drapes as she awaken from her nightmare. It all seemed too real. Before her mouth could speak to it, the shadow condensed into the darkness of a nearby willow tree. Jessie has saw this image before, but then again maybe not.

I spooked you, didn’t I? We have a character and a hint at the storyline, plus questions are raised: Is there really a ghost? Is Jessie insane? What untrained eye? It forces you to read on.

In summary: Incorporate more description. This will add depth to your characters.

What Would My Style Be Called?

Ya know how some people dress in pastels and bright colors and wear argyle sweater vests and they are labeled “preppy”? You know how some people are emo, goth, scene? Girly-girls, valley girls, prissy girls, hippies, sluts, tomboys, nerds, dorks, geeks, dweebs, ect?

What would I be?

-I am a girl.
-I have light brown hair and it’s medium length. Sometimes I keep it long, and I am thinking about cutting it short lol like it matters. And I have bangs (not really long like covering my face, normal length) and I sometimes wear them as side bangs.
-I do not wear make-up. I mean some girls wear bright red or really pink lipstick, or tons of sparkly lip gloss or heavy eye make-up, I don’t.
-I have glasses. Not round ones. Like, oval-ish rectangles? I don’t wear like crazy neon colors, but not just black. I wear darker colors, like dark purple, brown, blue (navy). But I kind of want to try something like light blue or pink, just to be different!
-I am energetic, and crazy and different. I don’t really like wearing all the same things, but I don’t like trying weird new stuff so I don’t get made fun of.
-Sometimes I can’t make up my mind!
-I wear graphic tees (with like characters or words on them. Nothing “trying to be cool” or nothing like “inappropriate”.) I wear Delia’s mostly. Like, Minnie Mouse, The Beatles, all Breakfast cereal people on a shirt!! Lol! I like it! I wear vintage shirts. Like Coca-Cola-75th Anniversary! Like stuff from the 60′s, 70′s. 80′s, LOL. But I don’t consider myself a Hippie-hippie, am I? I thought only a little but. And I am not Madonna or Cindi Lauper!! Lol! I aslo wear like David & Goliath tees, I think they are soo cute! I don’t really wear puppy tees, even tho I LOVE dogs, I just wouldn’t wear a tee with a puppy on it. I also wear tees with designs. Polka dots, stripes and tie dye. I also wear like inspiring tees, peace, love, happiness, stay strong. And I wear pretty stuff like with flowers and butterflies. But not really childish clothes, but not mature.
-I am not a jeans person. But if I do wear them, I usually wear light wash flare jeans. I guess I am a hippie right? And just to be fun, I have 3 pairs of colorful skinny jeans (pink, purple, blue). But I usually don’t wear them a lot. And since it is summer, I have a pair of jean capris and bermudas. Dark wash. But I really prefer my flare jeans (but more in the winter).
-SO I usually wear shorts. Only the jeans sometimes. I wear them to dance (lots of ppl wear sweatpants). I wear them inside the house, at friends house in the summer (instead of dresses or coverup).
-Sometimes when I’m going out to a restaurant with my friends, or sometimes even the movies, I wear fun skorts! Like ruffles (tiered), fun colors, plaid, floral!
-I don’t really wear dresses. Every once in a while. Like on special holidays, my mom MAKES me wear fancy stuff. And on occasion in the summer, I might wear the occasionally (lol) sundress.
-I don’t wear a bunch of jewelry, but I do wear scarves. Lots of them.
-I like hats, like fedoras, but I don’t really wear them. Every once in a while with my friends. I like cabbies, but they just don’t look right on me.
- I mostly wear a graphic tee with bermuda shorts and a scarf.
-I usually wear flip flops, because of the weather where I live, and they are so easy to put on. But I LOVE sneakers (converse) and boots (fringe, lace up,). And I love sneakers and flip flops with designs.
-If it’s like fall or spring or winter, and I’m not wearing a scarf, I’m wearing a jacket.

Yupp… so how would you label me?
I also like wearing headbands!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Small dog barking problem.. considering a collar.. advice?

I have a small yippy dog (half pomeranian/ half chihuahua) and he is an absolute little darling and the sweetest thing in the world.. problem is… he has the barking problem that alot of dogs his size do.

The SECOND anyone knocks on our front door he goes crazy. He continues to bark and bark at them for the first five minutes or so that they are in the house and its driving people (and his mommy!) nuts.

Ive tried every discipline method imaginable to no avail. Weve gone months where we ignore him when he does it so he realizes it doesnt get attention- nothing. Ive gone months of yelling at him when he does it or giving him a little spank- nothing.

Im at the point where im seriously consider one of those shock collars for him.. but i just.. couldnt imagine. Hes my little baby and i dont want to do anything that would harm him psychologically or anything (hes very sensitve lol!)

Does anyone have opinions on these? advice? have you used them? thanks!

The Electric bark collar is the only thing that will stop the dog barking, guaranteed!!! Other methods may exist, but, if you need the dog to stop, only the Electric bark collar will do that!
Now, having said that, I must say that you do not sound as if you are willing to put one on your dog because you are calling him your “little baby” and you “could not imagine”…etc!! Realize that he is a dog, not a human and put a collar on him that will stop his barking and will not drive you, his owner, not his “mommy” crazy!!! Good luck!

Best small dog no bark collar?

I am looking for a good no bark collar (from any company in any brand you know of) for my little mini dachshund/chihuahua mix who weighs about 5 to 6 pounds full grown (very important is his size).

What would you suggest?

We are trying to stick to either spray, vibration, and/or shock (or any combination of those) and not sound because our other dog has very sensitive ears and the ultrasonic stuff hurts her ears.

Also whatever collar we get needs to be automatic and not be one of the ones where you have to use a remote with it and also be fairly light since he is a rather small dog.

We have a found a few different ones we are interested in online but all seem to be split 50/50 on whether they are good or not so we are unsure which would be best to buy so we wanted to get regular peoples suggestions on it first and see what people say.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you and have a nice day.
To all of those who added their own opinions on my question rather than actual answers…My dog is trained, and for the most part very well trained not to ever bark. The only thing he has a problem with barking at is when someone is at the door or someone shuts their car door outside. Normally this would not be and issue except for it is hurting our other small dog when he does bark due to the condition with her ears and hearing. Any loud noises hurt her, including him barking even for a small bit. The vet was even the one who told us we need to get to not bark as much as possible (preferably never) for the sake of the other dog and suggested we look into the collars. We even have to watch our tv very low and be as quiet as possible for her.

So please, if you’re not going to give a real answer or real suggestions and are only going to write comments such as “why not train your dog” please don’t even waste my time posting on here.

It won’t take long to find out. Out of all the dogs I have had and trained only had one barker and since he was a small indoor dog just put him in bedroom till he quit the barking.
The Expert answers:

It shouldn’t be too heavy. My cats wouldn’t leave their collars on at first because they didn’t fit right (Except for one who slid it below her arms, she’s my little weirdo). Once I got them properly fitting collars, they adjusted, not immediately, but they did. It didn’t take too long. The dogs I had were the same way. I would suggest just putting the collar on them at first, give it a week or so, then put on the tags. It’s just something they have to get used to.

Can i put a collar on my rabbit?

I just got two rabbits that are completely identical. Both are solid black girls with brown eyes. I would like to name them, but cant because i cant tell them apart. I also need to be able to tell them apart for general care reasons because they live together in one cage.
So my question is:
Can I put collars (such as an extra small dog collar) on them?
If not, how can I tell them apart?

former question, how to you stop dogs from barking? where to you buy shock collars?

As I do not work, the three small terrier dogs are not left alone in the house all day, they are taken out three times a day. The dogs are only left for a few hours each week inside the house, with plenty food and water, whilst I go shopping, go to the dentist and doctors etc. I apologise if I came across as being rude, but I was trying to relate my neighbour’s situation, in that it may give me some insight to why she always complains about the dogs in the spring. The lady does not work next door as she is retired, and I have taken into considersation that she is not as young as she use to be, hence the reasons why my husband and myself have bent over backwards to try to accommadate our neighbour. One day she tells me that she has no problem with the dogs, only to be told differently from another neighbour that she has a problem with the dogs a few days later. Thank-you for all your answers and I will invest in the shock collars for the three dogs. Healthwise both us are now fit.

The Expert answers:

I wouldn’t go the shock collar route. You really have to be there to supervise the dogs for it to work. It’s not a good idea to leave your dogs out when you aren’t home. There’s too many wackos these days. Small terrier dogs are easily stolen for use as bait dogs for Pit Bull training. Kids can tease them or neighbors can poison them. I didn’t mean to be rude to you either. I just thought the dogs were out in the yard barking all day. I have neighbors like that and their whiny kids are just as bad…..

Found two small dogs yesterday – Any advice?

Yesterday , early afternoon. I opened my garage door while standing with the utility room door open and two small dogs ran into my house. I managed to get them out of my house and walked around my neighborhood for a potential owner and found no one home at any of the houses near me. Neither dog has a collar on it.

The dogs look to me like they may have dug out from someone’s back yard. Both of the dog’s bellies were wet and muddy and one of them had muddy claws.

I placed them in our dog’s crate thinking there will be an owner looking for them soon. There is also lots of construction going around my house so I didn’t want them to possible be ran over.

When I got off work I took them to Petsmart to check for a microchip and found one of the dogs has one but it wasn’t registered so that didn’t help.

Currently I have placed signs around my neighborhood and the neighboring streets, left some notes at neighboring houses, e-mailed my town’s animal control officers and a few veterinary clinics with pictures.

I have also posted two ads on Craigslist about them.

Is there anything else I can do and if I don’t receive any calls about them how long should I keep them before I just try to find them a new home?

A co-worker of mine told I should have just let them go last night and they would have found their way home, what do you guys think?
Also I don’t think letting them go is the best idea.
Bonzema, look at what I wrote. I already sent my town’s animal control the information with pictures.

I also think laws vary from town to town.
No the local animal shelter here is full of unwanted dogs and it is a kill shelter.
I did call the animal control and left them a message yesterday with my information.

I e-mailed them because I can e-mail pictures to them of the dogs.
The signs and the craigslist posting only says that it’s two small dogs and if you lost them please contact me. I didn’t give any description on breed, gender etc.
Thanks Erika that is a good suggestion. No, nothing ready for the Sunday ad but there is a local free newspaper I can try.

Is it bad for little dogs to wear collars?

Sombody told me once that small dogs shouldn’t wear standad collars because it can break their tracheas. Is this true? They said that small dogs need harnesses.

The Expert answers:

Well…Collars are exceptionally fine.
But…I deffinately would prefer a harness.
I own a Chihuahua. And A Papillon. Chihuahuas should most deffinately have harnesses because of Collapsing Trachea.
But my Papillon is perfectly happy and healthy wearing a collar. Lol
And.. They can only get their Trechea Collapsed, if you purposely yank on their leash to pull their collar inward on their neck.
